After a hurricane, it’s extremely important that you inspect your roof as soon as it’s safe to do so. After all, you’ll want to spot the damage and get it repaired as soon as possible before it causes further damage to your roof. Unfortunately, some homeowners find themselves overwhelmed by the inspection process as they often don’t know where to start.
In this post, roofing and exterior painting service experts NC Rebuild, Inc. gives you a step-by-step guide to inspecting your roofing system after a hurricane.
Step #1: The Attic
If you intend to start your inspection from the interior, then the attic is your best bet. To inspect your roof, take a flashlight and go up into your attic to check for wet areas on the sheathing’s underside or the sides of the wall. If you happen to see any wet areas, it’s a clear indication that your roof is leaking and you’ll have to note its position to be able to locate the roof damage from the outside.
Step #2: Shingles
From ground level, you can already spot missing shingles. However, if you want to see the complete extent of the damage on your shingles, you may have to climb up the roof to examine it up close. If you’re uncertain of doing this step on your own, however, you can always count on the help of home repair services providers to examine your shingles for you.
Step #3: Gutters
Your gutters play an important part in keeping your roofing system intact and in top shape. However, it’s also possible for them to be damaged by a hurricane. Once the storm has passed, check to see if the gutters are still secured to the eaves and if there are any leaks or breaks in the system itself. Otherwise, the next storm may wreak havoc on not just your roofing system but your siding and foundation as well.
